THE PROOF

History

The notion of a "proof" originated with the British Navy in the 18th century.  Sailors would receive rations of rum, or tots, in addition to food as part of their compensation.  Unfortunately for them, some unscrupulous officers, looking to augment their own pay, would sell some of the ship's rum, and water down the remaining rum so as not to arouse suspicion.  The sailors, realizing that something was amiss, began to test their rum rations by pouring a bit of the rum over gunpowder.  If it ignited, then they had "proved" there was a high enough alcohol content, thus authenticating the quality of their rum ration.  If it did not ignite, then it was considered "under proof."  This is where our modern notion of alcohol proof originates.

Us

We chose to name our blog after these sailors' ingenious quest for authenticity and quality.  Through our blog, we strive to bring you fashion, lifestyle, and culture with an authentic flair.  As Arthur Ashe said, "clothes and manners do not make the man; but once he is made, they greatly improve his appearance."  Our blog seeks to complete the gentleman from his exterior to his interior through fashion, history, and culture. We believe that the "gentleman" should be a source of knowledge, a man of intrigue, and, of course, supreme class.
